Yeah Me!…

August 16, 2013 Leave a comment

So as some of you may know in late September I am competing in my first ever Spartan Race, it is a 5km Sprint. So in getting into better (not enough time for good) shape and so I had set myself a goal at the gym: get to 5km on the treadmill.

Now for those that partake of the MMORPG (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game) or other gaming genres I would fall under the Tank Classification: Big & Strong but not so great at distance or speed. Add in some previous knee(s) & hip damage and the task becomes all that much harder.

But today I did it! 5kms in 38 minutes and 21 seconds.

Okay I will wait for all you runners and other healthier people to stop Rolling on the floor laughing. …3…2…1…and give myself a pat on the back.

I feel quite good about this, and the best part is now that I have hit the target I can only get better and I know I can do it. So I hope to see that time drop as I continue working out before and after the race. For a guy my size I think I’m doing pretty well.

Might need some deep cold gel for a few of the other muscles used tonight and I drank my new après workout drink: HoneyMaxx – Orange. See if your local health food store carries it. HoneyMaxx is a honey-based sports and exercise drink, and it’s very good. Now if I could only get them to pay me for saying that…LOL…no seriously… 😉 They also have a Lemon-Lime flavour.

But time to get to bed, considering how much lifting & carrying I do at work all day, and then go to the gym, I should be looking like a Mr. Universe contestant, but no such luck…

So enough for now…as some other sparkly has my attention…till next time…OH SO SHINY…

Yes, I am still alive…

August 9, 2013 2 comments

If anyone is still following this blog I just have to say once again, sorry,  a daily blogger I am not…

I tend to find that life gets in the way of posting more often than not. That and I tend to not have much to say, at least not much that won’t get me in trouble… I have been posting a few photos over on my Flickr page instead of on here as of late. So if you want to see some of the new pictures head on over there for a peek:

Other than that it has been all work and some play. Big car show tomorrow in town so I am hoping to fill up the memory card(s) on the camera. Don’t know if the 37 Celsius weather will be all that fun on the blacktop, but you gotta do it now and then. Considering I work outside most of the time now I think I’m getting use to it.

Still trying to get into better shape for my Spartan Race in September. I’m doing better than I thought I would so far, but… I see many Burpees in my future…

Doing some push-ups here at the house and all I can hear is my elbows crackling as I work out…I’m getting old and those dang Glucosamine / Chondroitin supplements that I am taking are not doing a damn thing. Sound like a bowl of Rice Krispies® in the morning when I stretch…SNAP! CRACKLE! POP!

Limping along…

September 23, 2012 Leave a comment

Over the last few months I have been dealing with a re-accruing foot issue that has me in a great deal of pain and limping along during my work week. Last week I thought I was finally on the mend until Friday rolled along and bang I was back on the pain bus. I have been to my doctor about this issue but figured enough is enough, off to the hospital for me. I took along China Mieville’s – The Scar to read as our local emergency department tends to be a rather long wait, but this time I got in and out rather fast. Considering the fact that I have been having this issue for months on and off I thought there must be something else going on with the foot, so I was able to talk the doctor into some x-rays. Unfortunately for me it appears that the ongoing issue is well, ongoing. Nothing showing up in the x-rays so another round of anti-inflammatory drugs and back to limping along.

My new job offers to pay for gym memberships at 2 of the local gyms; I will follow up later this week to see if I have to wait till my probation period is over before I can sign up again. Though my new job has my physical labour levels up compared to my last job, I think it might be good to get back to the gym.

Unfortunately for me there will be no returning to the good old days of the gym…gotta love how that bar is bending under the strain…

515lbs

515lbs

Some people asked why I was trying to lift so much, and it always came down to the fact that it was testing my limits and getting to the next heavier weight. It was the challenge, sure I could do lighter weights over and over, but there was something to doing those heavy lifts that got my adrenaline going.

And for those wondering…yup I lifted it…one does not look his best when lifting that much weight though…LOL

Yeah Me!

I was fooling around with some filters and paint programs with the Insulated Sunset 2 photo from the other day and came up with these…

Insulated Abstract 1

Insulated Abstract 2

Insulated Abstract 4

Once again, I kind of like them…but I have been known to be wrong…

Also have another motivational poster that I created from a picture I took today of my daughter climbing one of pieces of climbing equipment at the park.

Just my luck…

So after many tests and doctor visits it seems I finally have the answer to what ails me; I have an non-operable (unless it gets really, really bad) Sliding Hiatal Hernia up near the esophagus and top of the stomach. This thing even accounts for my wonderful Pseudo heart attack that started all the tests in the first place (from what I understand it put enough pressure into my chest cavity to squish the lungs and heart). So after the doctor and researching online there is not much to be done for this thing. Mainly one is stuck with it and has to adjust accordingly. One of the big issues from what I am reading is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) which means the old stomach acid gets into the esophagus and starts burning holes through it. So for that I am on a new medication; Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), which will be for the rest of my life it seems (need to keep good  medical coverage as this stuff is not cheap). At least I am not a lover of spicy foods so that is one dietary change I won’t have to make.

So as with anything the doc recommends the normal things, eat right, 6 small meals a day (Sound familiar Mom?), lose weight, take meds, and no heavy lifting. Now this last one  is where I am having an issue, neither the doctor or what I read online can tell me what weight is too heavy to lift. Do I need to stop at 25 lbs, 50 lbs, 100 lbs, 200 lbs. Do I have to stop lifting my kids, stop taking the groceries up the stairs, how much is too much at the gym? Or in general? So far I’m not finding an answer anywhere, and so I’m most likely not going to change my life aside from what I do at the gym; guess I’m stuck doing more boring cardio and no more of this…

So until I can get a definitive answer it seems to me that life will keep moving along as normal. Still waiting on the pulmonary tests but seems like this would be the issue there as well, not enough room for the lungs to fully inflate as one of the hernia’s symptoms can be misdiagnosed as Asthma since it affects the diaphragm.

Apple in the House…

June 4, 2011 3 comments

The first Apple product in the house has been bought; my DW got a Shuffle last night for her workouts at the gym. All I can say is that I’m not impressed in the least that after plugging it into the USB port it installed software & restarted my computer without any permission screens. Not one pop-up asking permission to install anything to my computer with options of Yes or Cancel. Apple has always been an arrogant/elitist company and they prove it once again.

Sure I bought the product but does that mean I automatically want your crap software on my system? The answer is NO. I would be happy with the product showing up just like any other USB drive that I can drag files too. But, NO, it has to install a bunch of crap to my system, including an icon picture of the dang shuffle in the colour that was bought. Add to the fact that the darn thing launches iTunes every time it gets plugged into the system.

I find iTunes to be one of the most annoying pieces of software I have on the computer. It is slow as hell to load & run and it is continuously in need of updates. That and it keeps trying to install Quick time and some stupid thing called Safari; both programs which I find useless.

This is why I bought an android tablet and not an  iPad 2, cost savings and I get more options and storage availability. From what I have seen from others online Apple is not the perfect company it claims to be, brand new iMac systems with heat sink issues, monitor issues, HDD issues. iPad2’s with screen issues. For what they are charging for their products these things should be as near perfect as they can get. Of course wait a few months and then they will drop the newest version on you and make you wonder why you just bought the last thing, iPhone5 anyone.

Rampage Unleashed…

So whether this will be a stroke of genius or utter stupidity only time will tell. I have pulled the old Norco Rampage from the storage locker to bike to the gym. I took the bike to the local bike shop that was recommended to me Spoke’N’Motion and got it back on Wednesday (Great service and prices). After picking up a few things for the bike like a new helmet and ordering in some new LED headlights (still to arrive); I ventured onto the mean streets for the trek to the gym.

All I can say after 5 or 6 years of not riding a bike anywhere would be…Hills…BAD!…VERY BAD…VERY, VERY BAD!

I’m not talking about big hills; I am just talking about some rather small, slow uphill grades. Needless to say my choice of gears and the state of my legs were far from competent for the task, it was a slow grind. Hopefully this will get better with time; but I made it there and back in one piece. And I am proud to say that I only had to walk the bike about the last block home; as I just didn’t have enough in the tank after a full workout & swim, and one long slow bleeding hill home. (I remember having to bike to the gym uphill both ways…dang you whippersnapper…)

I’m sure this will be a fair weather event as I have never been one to go biking in the rain or foul weather. But it should add a bit more variety to the workouts in the long run. And maybe I can stretch things out further a field as I get my biking legs back under me.

Now I just need make sure I don’t add to the accident tallies, those being hit by 4 cars and getting caught in the turbulence of a passing semi and being bounced off the trailer into the curb…

I need to knock on some freaking wood now, does a particle board desk count as wood…Knock…Knock…Knock…Hope that works…

Back to the gym…

January 31, 2011 Leave a comment

So I have started back to the gym, after about 10 weeks of inactivity due to a pinched nerve and then the fun with my appendix which covered all of January I’m back. And wow have I lost muscle and strength. My left side which was the side with the pinched nerve is pretty useless. I can not manage even a 40 lbs dumbbell curl,  my max bench press has been cut in half, and I need to find a proper shrug machine as the dumbbells max out at 80 lbs. Add that I’m starting back to my workouts in a new gym that I am not familiar with, so new machines to learn and new routines to figure out. But I guess all in good time. I was able to do a 1/2 hour on the treadmill some incline but no jogging yet as I still need to see the doctor on the 15th to get a clean bill of health. So it seems so far my weight-loss has been completely muscle based as my waistline has not really changed, which means since all my health issues began I have lost 15 lbs of muscle and the strength with it. It is going to be a long time gaining back what I lost in so short a time.
