New Job Day 2,3 and 4

September 15, 2012 Leave a comment

So 3 full days in my new job and all is going well, foot is still killing me but that tends to be the norm as of late so I just grin and bear it. Getting a feel for what is needed and was told on Friday that I can have my MP3 player going while I work in the storage area. Since then I have noticed others around the offices and other work area with headphones on so it’s all good; it can get a little quite at times.

Today was busy with an all-day First Aid course, so I am now certified to save your life, so be very nice to me…LOL…well at least for the next three years until I have to re-certify. I was supposed to be out visiting with family this weekend but my course date was changed at the very last minute so I had to stay home; but it is one more certification for me. It was a good to have the course again, the last time I took it was back in the 90`s. There were a few changes in the areas of Choking and CPR, as well there are the new AED`s (Automated External Defibrillator).

So I got home and did some cleaning, got rid of some boxes that were piling up and some other garbage. Got dinner finished up and noticed a show on the tube so I sat down to watch it. During the show I came to the conclusion that me alone with a big bag of trail mix is not a good thing…

But the big conclusion is happening so time to get back to watching the show… here is an older picture to end off with, enjoy!

Return of the Journal of an unemployed bum at home…Day 4:

September 10, 2012 1 comment

Day 4: after waking up I took care of a few things: put the final items in to the slow cooker for dinner, took the kids to pre-school, called back a company that called me last Friday about my resume and set up a meeting for 1:00pm. Got around to having breakfast around 10am after finally getting to vacuum the house.

I hoped into the car to run a few errands and making sure I knew where the company was located for the meeting. After that it was a matter of killing time until the interview.

Arrived about 10 minutes early thinking that there were 3 buildings none clearly marked as the main office so I figured it might take me a bit to track down where I needed to be. But I guessed right with the first building I went to; it took longer for them to find my interviewer.

We went over a bit more of the company history, pay and benefits and then I meet with the person who would be my direct supervisor to explain the job in more detail. Interview lasted over an hour and everything was looking good: 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday (which is perfect for the kids at Pre-School).  The pay is not stellar but better than some other jobs in the market. There is some room to grow in the company and earn more cash so I have accepted the job offer and I start tomorrow.

Shortest run as an unemployed bum for me ever…though I could have used a bit longer of a personal break.

In the end I will be hanging up my slacks, dress and/or polo shirts and switching to some good old jeans, work boots and t-shirt and a lot less stress and some physical labour (which might help loose the salesman’s 15).

After the interview I headed up the hill to take a few more pictures in the remaining time as an unemployed bum…

Return of the Journal of an unemployed bum at home…Day 2-3:

So, as of the last time I was writing these things I really did not cover off the weekend events. So on that note…

Here is a picture of Saturdays sunset…

Okay maybe a bit more about the weekend…

I picked up China Mielville‘s – The Scar this weekend. This will be my first time reading anything by this author; he came recommended to me by Myke Cole author of Shadow Ops: Control Point. Mr.Cole has requested my thoughts on the novel via Twitter:

Yes Sir!

So I will try another attempt of an average Joe book review after I have completed the book.

I truly appreciate Mr. Coles’ contact with his fan’s, I’m sure he has much better things to do (especially with Shadow Ops: Fortress Frontier due out early next year!) than to respond to my tweets.

I also bought David Weber‘sHow Firm a Foundation I have been waiting for this one for a while as I do not have the room anymore to purchase Hard Cover novels and must wait for the trade paperbacks to come out. I should be buying the eBook versions but my ereader is having some issues as of late. Also there is also something comforting in having a real book in ones hands; though not really environmentally friendly.

Return of the Journal of an unemployed bum at home…Day 1:…Maybe…

Wow, been a while once again…I’ll never have a career as a blogger…

So after only 6 months at my new job I came to the conclusion that this job was not going to work out. So taking the insane step of leaving a paying job without a new job to go to I gave my 2 weeks’ notice.

Today was my last day.

Surprisingly I am not really feeling the stress of being an unemployed bum like I was with the end of my last job. It might be the fact that this was my choice, not the result of company downsizing. But in the long run I think this was the right thing for my sanity and for the good of my family.

It might have been when they cancelled my vacation only a week before I was to leave without a viable reason or even a sorry.  My wife mentioned that we could take some pictures of me to Photoshop into the family summer vacation photos that I was not around for. Or it might be the fact that I was working on average a minimum of 20 plus hours a week for free as I was salary. It could have been the daily stress levels of having clients or the company never happy no matter what you did. It could have been the lack of support and poor communication levels from my upper manager(s).  Or maybe it was when I came home on day 6 of 12 days in a row averaging 12-13 hour each day when my wife looked at me and simply stated you have my full support to quit. All in all I think I hit my “Retail” breaking point, it may be late in my life but it is time for a career change.

So begins the job hunt once again…

I returned home tonight to at least one positive, a request for an interview from one of the companies that I had applied to last week. So I will be going in on Monday for an interview and facility tour. Total left field on the job front for me (but that was the idea right?), the company is worldwide and has been consistently growing since its inception, so there appears to be room to grow with them. If they like me then I am to have orientation on Tuesday, and here I thought I might have a bit of a summer vacation finally…

Ah well, the other downside of getting a job so soon will be I won’t be able to clean the house…Darn, no I really mean it…NOT!

In the mean time enjoy some cute critters I was able to get some pictures of today…

Day 31: Journal of an unemployed bum at home…no longer unemployed?

Interesting Day so far…

I decided to go for a Timmies coffee this morning and the car in front of me paid for my order, no real reason given (I passed the good deed onto the guy behind me, his order was even less than mine…so I paid for him). I then won $10 on my lotto ticket. After I got home I was called with a job offer even before the final HR phone interview. So I stopped by DW’s job at lunch to discuss the offer and it looks like I will accept in the morning as the HR lady still wants to talk tomorrow as originally planned.

All in all a good day!

Day 25: Journal of an unemployed bum at home…

Well a few more resumes sent out today, and tomorrow is the 2nd job interview that has been postponed numerous times. So I have my pants and shirt and tie pressed & hanging ready to go for the morning; Fingers Crossed.

I think the biggest issue I am finding locally is the lack of full time positions available. If I want to work part time, minimum wage with no benefits or even better for commission only,  I have a plethora of choices open to me. But that is not what I need; what I need just like anyone else out there is a permanent full-time position with a decent wage & benefits with room to grow with the company. I did find a rather nice posting for a government job but it required moving around during ones career and well that is not really viable either as I don’t want to get the kids settled into a school then have to pull them a few years later. As time progresses I may need to take a job that has me away from home for a number of days with a few days back, but will cross that bridge when I am closer to the end of my severance package. I have put a few resumes out towards that end but so far have been getting the “sorry, we are not hiring at this moment”, or “you require these certifications to be considered” email replies. I have checked on course availability & costs locally and it does not look good for me getting them anytime soon.

I had a another call from my old boss seeing how the job hunt was going, so far he is having as much luck as me; add in the fact that his location hampers the job market with most of the posted jobs to be found on the mainland. He also informed me of the demise of another one of the old sales team, what really sucks is that they just came back to work after being off for a while: “Hey there, welcome back we missed you, now please choose Option A or B.” – Ouch.  The remainder of the old team are out east this week for meetings on the new sales structure. I will have to call the other area rep and see how he is handling the changes so far and what is coming down from head office this week. It’s week 4 since I was laid-off and I am still finding out that my stores have not been informed. Wonder how my out of town independents are doing; they possibly just think I am not bothering to call on them…wonderful.

Visited the local Venture website to get a list of the major employers in the area so will be dropping more resumes off even though they have no posted jobs on any of the sites. Will have to hit the dollar store for more manila envelopes, and charge up the copy card. Hopefully my resume will not hit File 13 once they are dropped off.
