Might have some time for this now…

December 3, 2013 Leave a comment

So typing away here one handed as I am home bound for a number of weeks due to Carpal Tunnel surgery. I think the most painful part of the surgery was the darn tourniquet the had on my arm. Also there were some interesting sounds and tugging sensations as it was done with just local anesthetic. Was not able to watch as they had me laying down for the procedure. They were kind enough to double the dose at my request, as I seem to have a tolerance to pain medications and require more than normal, my dentist has my file tagged as a reminder even. Since my job has no light duty options I am home for the full recovery time, and of course I get my other hand done in the new year, so this is going to be a long process.

Carpal Tunnel #1

I get to take the wrap off tomorrow and get it cleaned up. If you want to see any of my new pictures I have been posting over at Flickr as of late: Digital Generator Photography (just a name, it’s not a business)

Okay this is taking longer than I thought, so I am signing off for the moment.

So enough for now…as some other sparkly has my attention…till next time…OH SO SHINY…

Two nights before Christmas…

December 23, 2012 2 comments

Twas two nights before Christmas, when all through the house

every child was vomiting, and sick in their tummies.

The stockings were packed in the suitcase with care,

In hopes to hang them at Grandma’s, if we ever get there.

The children were sprawled on the floor or the couch,

upon plastic sheets while fevered dreams danced in their heads.

And mamma in her ‘pj’s, and I in mine,

Had acquiescent our brains for another long restless night.

When out in the parking lot there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the curtains and looked out aghast.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow

gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.

When, what to my tired eyes should appear,

But a Bobcat plowing snow, keeping awake young ears.

With an insane driver, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be some Dick.

More rapid than eagles he spins and he twirls,

Scraping his blade across the ground and my frayed nerves!

The neighbours were playing some late night tunes,

As they smoke and drank and howled at the moon

I closed the curtains and returned to the dark of the room,

Straining to hear the ill children in the next room.

The children were grumpy and so were we,

With vomit buckets at the ready we waited in turns

A burp or a hiccup is a telling sign,

That things would get messy all too soon.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on TV

the sounds of some movie or kids show refrain.

As I made my way back to the living room, and was turning around,

The annoying sound of Toopy & Binoo began to abound.

It was some Christmas special with a Big Bad Wolf,

Too bad it’s third time we’ve seen it today.

Shows seem to keep the children’s minds of their icks,

it is very sad that we can lip-sync the story anyway.

Their eyes-seem so sunken! So tired their stares!

Their cheeks are so clammy, their skin so pale!

Their droll little mouths were drawn up like a bow,

Their heads hang limp over their puke bowls.

Their hair is pulled up in a ponytails,

too keep it out of the way.

They eat in small spurts, each time a worry.

Children so sick that they can’t keep down a bowlful of jelly!

Still sick as they are they have moments of cute,

And I laugh now and then, in spite of myself!

A rub of my eyes and a shake of my head,

Soon gave me a thought that we had nothing to dread.

Kids will get sick as all of us know,

Unfortunately the timing sure sucks as we know.

And so the stomach bugs are ruining our Christmas,

So we give medications and try to get lots of rest.

Some Gravol, some Advil which we bought in a plenty.

As we trudge to our beds, in hope of an uneventful night

We say to our family and friends in case this bug goes on,

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

Get off my lawn…

I think I am having an old man moment…

I have had this card tucked away for years but decided to bring it out and scan it to share with the masses; well not that the masses follow this blog but here it is anyway…

I can’t remember who gave it to me originally but I was in high school at the time. I don’t believe that I was doing anything that would warrant the card being a direct comment to me, more they were just passing the joke along (I hope). I thought it was perfect being in standard business card format so you could pull them out of your wallet and pass them out when the moment struck.

Print off a few and have fun!

Okay, I had written a big long rant here about spoiled, self-entitled kids now-a-days and all that, but I deleted it…

I know my category is Incoherent Text, but I will not subject everyone to it anymore than I do already, also I was getting incoherent even to my own re-reading.

Suffice-it to say: Dang whipper-snappers today…elementary kids with iPhone 5’s out past 11pm, what’s the world coming too?

I guess if I’m going to shake my cane at the kids on my lawn I better see about getting a lawn soon.

Or maybe I will take over a bench at the park and be the crazy old guy who thinks it’s his lawn…Ya, that might work, less yard maintenance involved…

So enough for now…as some other sparkly has my attention…till next time…OH SO SHINY…

Just my luck…

So after many tests and doctor visits it seems I finally have the answer to what ails me; I have an non-operable (unless it gets really, really bad) Sliding Hiatal Hernia up near the esophagus and top of the stomach. This thing even accounts for my wonderful Pseudo heart attack that started all the tests in the first place (from what I understand it put enough pressure into my chest cavity to squish the lungs and heart). So after the doctor and researching online there is not much to be done for this thing. Mainly one is stuck with it and has to adjust accordingly. One of the big issues from what I am reading is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) which means the old stomach acid gets into the esophagus and starts burning holes through it. So for that I am on a new medication; Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), which will be for the rest of my life it seems (need to keep good  medical coverage as this stuff is not cheap). At least I am not a lover of spicy foods so that is one dietary change I won’t have to make.

So as with anything the doc recommends the normal things, eat right, 6 small meals a day (Sound familiar Mom?), lose weight, take meds, and no heavy lifting. Now this last one  is where I am having an issue, neither the doctor or what I read online can tell me what weight is too heavy to lift. Do I need to stop at 25 lbs, 50 lbs, 100 lbs, 200 lbs. Do I have to stop lifting my kids, stop taking the groceries up the stairs, how much is too much at the gym? Or in general? So far I’m not finding an answer anywhere, and so I’m most likely not going to change my life aside from what I do at the gym; guess I’m stuck doing more boring cardio and no more of this…

So until I can get a definitive answer it seems to me that life will keep moving along as normal. Still waiting on the pulmonary tests but seems like this would be the issue there as well, not enough room for the lungs to fully inflate as one of the hernia’s symptoms can be misdiagnosed as Asthma since it affects the diaphragm.

So enough for now…as some other sparkly has my attention…till next time…OH SO SHINY…

It’s Friday…

What a start to the day…

So started the day with an unplanned 3+Hour conference call for work, I had thought it was to be the normal 1 hour meeting and as such had made plans to meet up with some of my customers out-of-town. Needless to say I had to call them and let them know that I was going to be very late. Snow has been off and on and the roads have not been getting much attention from the road crews and as such were a tad slippery. Add in the fact that lots of people did not have their snow tires on and it made for a lot longer journey there and back. Unfortunately that ment that in the end I missed one of my store managers. One item that was good for the moment on the work side was that I will not be having the boss riding with me next week at this point and time, will possibly see him in a few more weeks at this rate.

I have taken the last dose of antibiotics for my latest round of chest infection, still have a nagging cough at night though it is better. Mixing a number of drugs at night-time in an effort to get some rest and keep myself quite, last night was a bit odd for me as it seems two of my meds are not playing well together leaving me very dopey. Worst part was the fact that the back and arm are still hurting which leads me more and more to the conclusion that it is a pinched nerve rather than a pulled muscle as the drugs I am taking should take the pain away. I have once again tried the drug combo in a hope to pass out and rest, will see if this affects my writing as this progresses.

As I said it appears that winter is finally here, with snow and the cold temps. Currently minus 14 + the wind chill. I think it is time that I stop taking the garbage out in shorts and sandals. Normally I find that as long as I have a jacket on to keep my core temp stable that I find that the extremities are not that effected. Alas it seem that these old bones are acting up more and more and I feel the chill. We will be joining the long line-up in the morning to see about getting my wifes winter tires on, she has also mentioned that the car seems to take a long time to warm-up so might have a heater issue for the dealership to look at. So far on the snow side we seem to be doing better than the towns around us for some reason, ran into much larger quantities out-of-town.

Sick Kids…

So one of the twins is back on antibiotics for another ear infection, how that came about with her out of daycare for so long is a bit odd, but it seems to be on the mend rather quickly and she is her normal self for the most part. Sister is on a new inhaler for her chest issues as well and it seems to be helping her get to sleep at night for longer times. Daycare itself has been shut down again due to operator illness. I miss summer time, when there was no daycare, kids were not sick, it was so nice.

Well no comments on the idea of posting a cartoon on here based on the twins and life around them in general, the next question in regards to this idea if I was to do it is what would I call it…thoughts?

Happy Wife…

As the old saying goes, Happy Wife, Happy life…well my lovely wife is stuck doing report cards; one of her least enjoyed aspect of teaching. So before taking my drugs and being not able to drive I was able to complete a quick Ice cream run to help her through the drudgery of doing report cards, I don’t think I got enough…

Have finished The Last Stormlord by Glenda Larke from Orbit Books, new author for me once again, Orbit seems to have a number of newer authors that I have not come across before. Currently reading the next book in the series called Stormlord Rising. and I will have to see about tracking down some of her other novels. After my current book I have book one and two lined up for the Brotherhood of the Griffon by Richard Lee Byers.

Trips to the gym have been non-existent these last 2 weeks and until I can get this darn neck and back figured out I don’t know when I will get back at it. I can not even do time on the treadmill as each step sends jolts of pain as well so no clue what to do at this time.

So enough for now…as some other sparkly has my attention…till next time…OH SO SHINY…

I’m sick it seems…

November 10, 2010 2 comments

Well I seem to have snagged an upper respiratory infection and I am back on the old 10 day antibiotics. Doc came back with the prescription and a note for work saying I need to be off until the 14th or so. Don’t think I am feeling bad enough to be off work but a few more days of no sleep with all the hacking up of a lung and I might re-think that note. Seems that bumping up my Vitamin D intake has done nothing for me for staving off illness. So this will be day 2 not at the gym this week as I get breathless walking up the stairs; so working out would possibly make me pass out. Stopped off and picked up some more NeoCitrin and codeine cough syrup so I’ll be playing mad scientist tonight mixing meds…mughahahaha! Also seems that because I am OLD during one of my coughing fits I pulled a muscle. I’m going to be in real trouble when I get really OLD! Might have to take me in the back field and put me out of my misery like a lame horse or something, but I don’t think my insurance would pay after something like that.

It was suggested that I take up the pencil and begin a weekly or daily cartoon based on the adventures of the twins and being parents of twins. Might be something to look into but will see if time is permitting and talent, as that little drawing from the other day took far longer than it should have with multiple drafts. Thoughts?

Remembrance Day…

Just a reminder to take a moment and honour those whom have fought for our freedom both past and present. Eleventh Hour on the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month. But shouldn’t we keep them in our minds and hearts 365 days of the year and not just one day in November? They pay the ultimate price, respect has been earned.

So enough for now…as some other sparkly has my attention…till next time…OH SO SHINY…
