Flower snapshots…

February 14, 2013 1 comment

Being that it is Valentine’s Day I got my darling wife some flowers early to avoid the mad rush at the stores. So that of course meant that I had to try some more pictures… a little too much light glare on the water drops but I will have to figure out a better way to diffuse the light next time.

Two nights before Christmas…

December 23, 2012 2 comments

Twas two nights before Christmas, when all through the house

every child was vomiting, and sick in their tummies.

The stockings were packed in the suitcase with care,

In hopes to hang them at Grandma’s, if we ever get there.

The children were sprawled on the floor or the couch,

upon plastic sheets while fevered dreams danced in their heads.

And mamma in her ‘pj’s, and I in mine,

Had acquiescent our brains for another long restless night.

When out in the parking lot there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the curtains and looked out aghast.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow

gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.

When, what to my tired eyes should appear,

But a Bobcat plowing snow, keeping awake young ears.

With an insane driver, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be some Dick.

More rapid than eagles he spins and he twirls,

Scraping his blade across the ground and my frayed nerves!

The neighbours were playing some late night tunes,

As they smoke and drank and howled at the moon

I closed the curtains and returned to the dark of the room,

Straining to hear the ill children in the next room.

The children were grumpy and so were we,

With vomit buckets at the ready we waited in turns

A burp or a hiccup is a telling sign,

That things would get messy all too soon.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on TV

the sounds of some movie or kids show refrain.

As I made my way back to the living room, and was turning around,

The annoying sound of Toopy & Binoo began to abound.

It was some Christmas special with a Big Bad Wolf,

Too bad it’s third time we’ve seen it today.

Shows seem to keep the children’s minds of their icks,

it is very sad that we can lip-sync the story anyway.

Their eyes-seem so sunken! So tired their stares!

Their cheeks are so clammy, their skin so pale!

Their droll little mouths were drawn up like a bow,

Their heads hang limp over their puke bowls.

Their hair is pulled up in a ponytails,

too keep it out of the way.

They eat in small spurts, each time a worry.

Children so sick that they can’t keep down a bowlful of jelly!

Still sick as they are they have moments of cute,

And I laugh now and then, in spite of myself!

A rub of my eyes and a shake of my head,

Soon gave me a thought that we had nothing to dread.

Kids will get sick as all of us know,

Unfortunately the timing sure sucks as we know.

And so the stomach bugs are ruining our Christmas,

So we give medications and try to get lots of rest.

Some Gravol, some Advil which we bought in a plenty.

As we trudge to our beds, in hope of an uneventful night

We say to our family and friends in case this bug goes on,

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

Return of the Journal of an unemployed bum at home…Day 4:

September 10, 2012 1 comment

Day 4: after waking up I took care of a few things: put the final items in to the slow cooker for dinner, took the kids to pre-school, called back a company that called me last Friday about my resume and set up a meeting for 1:00pm. Got around to having breakfast around 10am after finally getting to vacuum the house.

I hoped into the car to run a few errands and making sure I knew where the company was located for the meeting. After that it was a matter of killing time until the interview.

Arrived about 10 minutes early thinking that there were 3 buildings none clearly marked as the main office so I figured it might take me a bit to track down where I needed to be. But I guessed right with the first building I went to; it took longer for them to find my interviewer.

We went over a bit more of the company history, pay and benefits and then I meet with the person who would be my direct supervisor to explain the job in more detail. Interview lasted over an hour and everything was looking good: 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday (which is perfect for the kids at Pre-School).  The pay is not stellar but better than some other jobs in the market. There is some room to grow in the company and earn more cash so I have accepted the job offer and I start tomorrow.

Shortest run as an unemployed bum for me ever…though I could have used a bit longer of a personal break.

In the end I will be hanging up my slacks, dress and/or polo shirts and switching to some good old jeans, work boots and t-shirt and a lot less stress and some physical labour (which might help loose the salesman’s 15).

After the interview I headed up the hill to take a few more pictures in the remaining time as an unemployed bum…

Guess I better finish oiling my new boots and figure out what I am going to pack for lunch…

Return of the Journal of an unemployed bum at home…Day 1:…Maybe…

September 7, 2012 2 comments

Wow, been a while once again…I’ll never have a career as a blogger…

So after only 6 months at my new job I came to the conclusion that this job was not going to work out. So taking the insane step of leaving a paying job without a new job to go to I gave my 2 weeks’ notice.

Today was my last day.

Surprisingly I am not really feeling the stress of being an unemployed bum like I was with the end of my last job. It might be the fact that this was my choice, not the result of company downsizing. But in the long run I think this was the right thing for my sanity and for the good of my family.

It might have been when they cancelled my vacation only a week before I was to leave without a viable reason or even a sorry.  My wife mentioned that we could take some pictures of me to Photoshop into the family summer vacation photos that I was not around for. Or it might be the fact that I was working on average a minimum of 20 plus hours a week for free as I was salary. It could have been the daily stress levels of having clients or the company never happy no matter what you did. It could have been the lack of support and poor communication levels from my upper manager(s).  Or maybe it was when I came home on day 6 of 12 days in a row averaging 12-13 hour each day when my wife looked at me and simply stated you have my full support to quit. All in all I think I hit my “Retail” breaking point, it may be late in my life but it is time for a career change.

So begins the job hunt once again…

I returned home tonight to at least one positive, a request for an interview from one of the companies that I had applied to last week. So I will be going in on Monday for an interview and facility tour. Total left field on the job front for me (but that was the idea right?), the company is worldwide and has been consistently growing since its inception, so there appears to be room to grow with them. If they like me then I am to have orientation on Tuesday, and here I thought I might have a bit of a summer vacation finally…

Ah well, the other downside of getting a job so soon will be I won’t be able to clean the house…Darn, no I really mean it…NOT!

In the mean time enjoy some cute critters I was able to get some pictures of today…

One Man’s opinion on the BC Teachers Strike…UPDATE

February 28, 2012 1 comment

Who wants to see what Bill 22 – 2012 EDUCATION IMPROVEMENT ACT is all about? The document can be found here: http://www.leg.bc.ca/39th4th/1st_read/gov22-1.htm I will post more after I get a chance to read this thing…

Geez, I get past the Definitions to run right into this Cluster F***:

Application of Labour Relations Code

2  (1) The Code and the regulations made under it apply in respect of a matter to which Division 2 or 3 applies, but if there is a conflict or an inconsistency between Division 2 or 3 and those enactments, Divisions 2 and 3 apply.

(2) The Labour Relations Board has exclusive jurisdiction to decide a question arising under Division 2 or 3, including any question of a conflict or an inconsistency referred to in subsection (1).

So basically what I am reading here is that; if anything within Division 2 or 3 is considered against the law under the Labour Relations Code the LRC laws are null & void.

What a way to start a contract, also wondering how they can back date a contract to July 2011, sure that was the end of the last contract but that means teachers pretty much loose a year. and in 2013 this starts all over again.

Hey look at that, Bill 22 gets to play with Class sizes…

(B) deleting Article D.2 entitled “K-3 Primary Class Size”, – Free Daycare for everyone! We can pack the little ones in like Sardines, I mean really how much can they learn in those classes, may as well just hire a babysitter and wait till they get to a real grade to teach them…oh wait, we have something on that as well in this Bill…

(2.1) Subject to subsection (2.4), a board must ensure that the class size of any class for any of grades 4 to 12 in any school in its school district does not exceed 30 students unless

(a) in the opinions of the superintendent of schools for the school district and the principal of the school, the organization of the class is appropriate for student learning, or

(b) the class is in a prescribed category of classes.

So what we got here is if there is a really good reason for the class to be bigger than 30 kids we can make it happen. In the mean time Grades 4-12 can be 30 kids per class. Maybe we should set 10 minutes per kid a day so that they can have some one on one time with the teacher, because I really see teachers having the time to deal with that many kids educational problems on a daily basis.

at this rate I might need to start a new post on this BS…

Day 31: Journal of an unemployed bum at home…no longer unemployed?

February 28, 2012 2 comments

Interesting Day so far…

I decided to go for a Timmies coffee this morning and the car in front of me paid for my order, no real reason given (I passed the good deed onto the guy behind me, his order was even less than mine…so I paid for him). I then won $10 on my lotto ticket. After I got home I was called with a job offer even before the final HR phone interview. So I stopped by DW’s job at lunch to discuss the offer and it looks like I will accept in the morning as the HR lady still wants to talk tomorrow as originally planned.

All in all a good day!
