Wrist unwrapped..

December 5, 2013 Leave a comment

So I got to take the bandages off yesterday and give everything a wash. Hard to believe this little cut has me off work for a number of weeks but I do not have any light duty options. Heck one day I physically picked up and moved over 4600kg/10,000lbs of product (I should be in better shape with all that). Stitches come out next week and I will find out what more I am allowed to do with the hand. Right now I’m not allowed to do more than wiggling the fingers and move my wrist. Doing things around the house with my non-dominant hand is a bit of a learning curve, but I am getting there. Since talking to a guy that had the same surgery but didn’t follow doctors orders I’m being very good about not using my hand. He is in worse shape now than before the surgery, all because he felt good enough and went back to work too early. Everyone seems to think this is a great vacation but being stuck at home not at 100% will slowly drive me (more) insane I think. But considering the weather as of late I guess I should be happy that I’m not out working in it.

Get off my lawn…

November 12, 2012 Leave a comment

I think I am having an old man moment…

I have had this card tucked away for years but decided to bring it out and scan it to share with the masses; well not that the masses follow this blog but here it is anyway…

I can’t remember who gave it to me originally but I was in high school at the time. I don’t believe that I was doing anything that would warrant the card being a direct comment to me, more they were just passing the joke along (I hope). I thought it was perfect being in standard business card format so you could pull them out of your wallet and pass them out when the moment struck.

Print off a few and have fun!

Okay, I had written a big long rant here about spoiled, self-entitled kids now-a-days and all that, but I deleted it…

I know my category is Incoherent Text, but I will not subject everyone to it anymore than I do already, also I was getting incoherent even to my own re-reading.

Suffice-it to say: Dang whipper-snappers today…elementary kids with iPhone 5’s out past 11pm, what’s the world coming too?

I guess if I’m going to shake my cane at the kids on my lawn I better see about getting a lawn soon.

Or maybe I will take over a bench at the park and be the crazy old guy who thinks it’s his lawn…Ya, that might work, less yard maintenance involved…

Limping along…

September 23, 2012 Leave a comment

Over the last few months I have been dealing with a re-accruing foot issue that has me in a great deal of pain and limping along during my work week. Last week I thought I was finally on the mend until Friday rolled along and bang I was back on the pain bus. I have been to my doctor about this issue but figured enough is enough, off to the hospital for me. I took along China Mieville’s – The Scar to read as our local emergency department tends to be a rather long wait, but this time I got in and out rather fast. Considering the fact that I have been having this issue for months on and off I thought there must be something else going on with the foot, so I was able to talk the doctor into some x-rays. Unfortunately for me it appears that the ongoing issue is well, ongoing. Nothing showing up in the x-rays so another round of anti-inflammatory drugs and back to limping along.

My new job offers to pay for gym memberships at 2 of the local gyms; I will follow up later this week to see if I have to wait till my probation period is over before I can sign up again. Though my new job has my physical labour levels up compared to my last job, I think it might be good to get back to the gym.

Unfortunately for me there will be no returning to the good old days of the gym…gotta love how that bar is bending under the strain…

Some people asked why I was trying to lift so much, and it always came down to the fact that it was testing my limits and getting to the next heavier weight. It was the challenge, sure I could do lighter weights over and over, but there was something to doing those heavy lifts that got my adrenaline going.

And for those wondering…yup I lifted it…one does not look his best when lifting that much weight though…LOL

Yeah Me!

I was fooling around with some filters and paint programs with the Insulated Sunset 2 photo from the other day and came up with these…

Insulated Abstract 1

Insulated Abstract 2

Insulated Abstract 4

Once again, I kind of like them…but I have been known to be wrong…

Also have another motivational poster that I created from a picture I took today of my daughter climbing one of pieces of climbing equipment at the park.

New Job Day 5

September 17, 2012 Leave a comment

So the job is going well, the addition of music/radio to the work day makes things move along much quicker and I can keep up with world events with the news. I am getting a lot done around the work place and even wound up patching a section of the roof with tar after finding a number of holes. Then I put together some large shipping containers which I will get to fill up tomorrow. I think I am going to request a mechanics stool or something to save my knees from having to kneel on the floor when getting boxes in and out. Once we clear some more space we get to re-work everything in storage…hope to get it all squared away before the snow flies.

The rest of the weekend was pretty much the normal though I pretty much went close to two days without taking any photos. So I tried a little photo project that was a little different. I’m sure I had some of the neighbours thinking I was taking photos of them but it was the only way to get the item I was focusing on. That item was the Glass Insulators on the power lines, so I took a few shots around noon and again at sunset.

I think the way the light is refracted in the glass was rather interesting, but that may be just me…I think I might try cropping some smaller sections of the pictures to see about some more random and abstract images.

Was also able to get a photo of a Northern Flicker, but no matter where I moved it was partially hidden or in harsh shadow.

New Job Day 2,3 and 4

September 15, 2012 Leave a comment

So 3 full days in my new job and all is going well, foot is still killing me but that tends to be the norm as of late so I just grin and bear it. Getting a feel for what is needed and was told on Friday that I can have my MP3 player going while I work in the storage area. Since then I have noticed others around the offices and other work area with headphones on so it’s all good; it can get a little quite at times.

Today was busy with an all-day First Aid course, so I am now certified to save your life, so be very nice to me…LOL…well at least for the next three years until I have to re-certify. I was supposed to be out visiting with family this weekend but my course date was changed at the very last minute so I had to stay home; but it is one more certification for me. It was a good to have the course again, the last time I took it was back in the 90`s. There were a few changes in the areas of Choking and CPR, as well there are the new AED`s (Automated External Defibrillator).

So I got home and did some cleaning, got rid of some boxes that were piling up and some other garbage. Got dinner finished up and noticed a show on the tube so I sat down to watch it. During the show I came to the conclusion that me alone with a big bag of trail mix is not a good thing…

But the big conclusion is happening so time to get back to watching the show… here is an older picture to end off with, enjoy!

Return of the Journal of an unemployed bum at home…Day 4:

September 10, 2012 1 comment

Day 4: after waking up I took care of a few things: put the final items in to the slow cooker for dinner, took the kids to pre-school, called back a company that called me last Friday about my resume and set up a meeting for 1:00pm. Got around to having breakfast around 10am after finally getting to vacuum the house.

I hoped into the car to run a few errands and making sure I knew where the company was located for the meeting. After that it was a matter of killing time until the interview.

Arrived about 10 minutes early thinking that there were 3 buildings none clearly marked as the main office so I figured it might take me a bit to track down where I needed to be. But I guessed right with the first building I went to; it took longer for them to find my interviewer.

We went over a bit more of the company history, pay and benefits and then I meet with the person who would be my direct supervisor to explain the job in more detail. Interview lasted over an hour and everything was looking good: 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday to Friday (which is perfect for the kids at Pre-School).  The pay is not stellar but better than some other jobs in the market. There is some room to grow in the company and earn more cash so I have accepted the job offer and I start tomorrow.

Shortest run as an unemployed bum for me ever…though I could have used a bit longer of a personal break.

In the end I will be hanging up my slacks, dress and/or polo shirts and switching to some good old jeans, work boots and t-shirt and a lot less stress and some physical labour (which might help loose the salesman’s 15).

After the interview I headed up the hill to take a few more pictures in the remaining time as an unemployed bum…

Guess I better finish oiling my new boots and figure out what I am going to pack for lunch…

Return of the Journal of an unemployed bum at home…Day 2-3:

So, as of the last time I was writing these things I really did not cover off the weekend events. So on that note…

Here is a picture of Saturdays sunset…

September 8th Sunset

Okay maybe a bit more about the weekend…

I picked up China Mielville‘s – The Scar this weekend. This will be my first time reading anything by this author; he came recommended to me by Myke Cole author of Shadow Ops: Control Point. Mr.Cole has requested my thoughts on the novel via Twitter:

Yes Sir!

So I will try another attempt of an average Joe book review after I have completed the book.

I truly appreciate Mr. Coles’ contact with his fan’s, I’m sure he has much better things to do (especially with Shadow Ops: Fortress Frontier due out early next year!) than to respond to my tweets.

I also bought David Weber‘sHow Firm a Foundation I have been waiting for this one for a while as I do not have the room anymore to purchase Hard Cover novels and must wait for the trade paperbacks to come out. I should be buying the eBook versions but my ereader is having some issues as of late. Also there is also something comforting in having a real book in ones hands; though not really environmentally friendly.
